-the name Toronto can be traced to the Huron word for 'place where trees stand in the water'

-prior to 1834 it was know as York, named in honour of Prince Frederick, the Duke of York.

-the city was twice the capital of Canada; the first time from 1849-1852 then from 1856-1858.

-at a height of 1815 feet (533 metres), the CN Tower was the tallest free standing structure in the World for 31 years, until recently being eclipsed. It is still the tallest in North America.

-in 2003, the city hosted one of the biggest outdoor concerts ever SARSstock, attracting over 450 000 people to Downsview Park to see the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Rush and many more.

-Ontario Place is home to the first permanent IMAX theatre in the World: the Cinesphere.

-The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is the oldest annual fair in the World.

-The Rogers Centre (formerly the SkyDome) was the first sports stadium in the World to have a motorized, fully-retractable roof.
