- Ottawa was chosen as Canada's captial city in 1857 by Queen Victoria. This was partially due to its strategic location between Toronto and Montréal.

- prior to 1855, the city was know as Bytown; named after Lt. Col. John By who had supervised the construction of the Rideau Canal.

- the Canal took 6 years to build and measures 202 kilometers. It reaches Lake Ontario at the City of Kingston, Ontario.

- in winter, the Rideau Canal becomes the longest maintained skating rink in the world. It measures nearly 8 kilometers from end to end.

- Rideau Falls -the junction where the Rideau and Ottawa rivers meet- was named by famed explorer Samuel de Champlain for its likeness to curtains; 'rideau' being the French equivalent.

- as the national capital, Ottawa has embassies, High Commissions and Consulates from over 130 different countries.

- every July the city hosts the biggest one-day beach volleyball tournament in the World, attracting over 10,000 players to the Alcatel HOPE Volleyball Summerfest.

- Ottawa has the second-highest percentage of people who speak both French and English of any major Canadian city.

- as a visitor you can stay at the only Hostel located in a former prison; the site of the last public hanging in Canada.
