Québec City
History comes alive in the fortified City
Among
the oldest settlements in North America, Québec City was founded
400 years ago this year (1608-2008) by the famed French explorer
Samuel de Champlain.
Today,
Québec City keeps the past alive with an impressive array of museums,
historical sites and activities that trace its tumultuous evolution
through the centuries. Watch History lessons jump right off the
page as your students explore the cobblestoned streets and fortified
ramparts of the Old City (A UNESCO Heritage Site) and
walk in the steps of the General Montcalm during the
Battle of Québec on the Plaines of Abraham.
The warm and festive nature of Québec City's
denizens is no more apparent than during the annual Winter
Carnival in February. The city is transformed into a wonderland
of snow and ice. Some highlights include the Ice Hotel,
the canoe race accross the frozen St. Lawrence River and the festival
parade marshaled by the iconic Bonhomme Carnaval.
Despite its charm, do not be afraid to venture
outside the city walls to explore what the surrounding regions
have to offer. A day excursion on the Côte de Beaupré
and l'île d'Orléans will allow you to experience true
Québéquois culture. Take in the majesty of Montmorency Falls
and sample genuine cuisine (sorry, we're not talking about poutine)
at a traditional maple sugar shack.
A trip up the coast to Tadoussac is
well worth the effort in the spring to see the whales and explore
the Saguenay Fjord
